My students surprise me every day, and that's what I love about middle school. They're social learners. When I ask them to explain things to each other, they often “get it” more than if I were to actually explain it to them. I'm trying to use that more to my advantage when we're doing math learning in the classroom. I also think when we can connect it to something concrete or something in their real life, I think it really helps with middle schoolers. I also think just like us as adults, they have to make sense of it in order to take ownership of it. If they don't make their own meaning out of it, then it's learning without depth.
