Kindergarten Math – Number Operations and Counting

Clip 3/6: Lesson Number Operations Part C

Overview

Tracy Sola pivots her transitional kindergarten students from generating ideas and prior knowledge about squirrels, to the mathematical task that involves sharing five acorns between two squirrels. The students use a visual representation of two squirrels and square tiles to represent the acorns.

Teacher Commentary

I thought that the students really took on that challenge; it was very interesting to them. At this level, there's really not competition or, like, the worry to get it right. It was about trying to make sense. You can see that they are so free that, you know, it's like, “Why do we all have different answers, because we're trying to do math!”
