Standard 6: Attend to Precision

Clip 1/43: Standard 6: Attend to Precision Using Number Operations and Counting Part E

Overview

Mathematically proficient students try to communicate precisely to others. They try to use clear definitions in discussion with others and in their own reasoning. They state the meaning of the symbols they choose, including using the equal sign consistently and appropriately...

After the students represent the problem - a squirrel has four nuts and shares two with a friend - Tracy Sola asks the students to reason about their representations and make observations regarding the numbers. Some students state that the numbers are equal and, after some further probing, they are able to explain that the equal numbers mean each squirrel has the same amount.
