8th Grade Math – Coordinate Geometry, Logical Reasoning, Justification and Proof

Clip 11/11: Coordinate Geometry Debrief Part 4

Overview

Coach Cecilio Dimas asks Antoinette Villarin in the lesson debrief to share and describe the “top-three classroom management routines that you use for building classroom — and sustaining classroom — culture.”

Antoinette names and describes her routines of turn-and-talk, attentive listening, and three reads.

Teacher Commentary

I really appreciate that Cecilio Dimas came and observed the lesson. He came once just to meet the kids; then the second time he came was for this lesson.

In our initial meeting, I told him ideas that I was thinking of doing, and I just ran it by with him and he was being very supportive. He was a sounding board, like, when I was thinking of ideas.

Also, during the lesson when I was a little bit worried about time, that's what I love about collaborating with other teachers: “What do you think about this?” Because in the moment, you're making so many decisions.

After this lesson, I hope to work with my students on continuing to listen to each other. I'm excited to have them really get better at their formal proofs, because at this point we’ve written informal paragraph proofs about how they're getting their thinking.

Now, to go into, like, a two-column proof or a flow chart proof, and have the reasoning to back it up, I feel like that's, like, the next direction we're going to go.
