Overview
Erika Isomura describes how, in the first lesson of the documented segment, she guided her students into understanding how fractions start to appear as decimals, but her students didn’t yet see the relationship between the patterns within fractions and within decimals.
Mia Buljan and Erika discuss students’ prior conceptions that might have made it challenging for them to identify and express patterning in fraction and decimal representations. Erika identifies that her students were trying to figure out the pattern, while at the same time trying to figure out the division problem, and that doing both simultaneously was difficult for them.
