## Overview

Mia Buljan engages her 2nd-grade learners in a number talk working with the problem 18 + 32. She challenges her students to identify different ways to solve the problem, then engages them in sharing and defending their thinking. Some students identify that working with groupings of 10 was helpful to them.

I remind my students that in mathematics, even though one answer may have the most agreement, mathematicians still test and prove their answers.
