1st Grade Math - Developing Student Understanding of Non-Standard and Standard Measurement

Clip 9/17: Measurement Lesson Part D1

Overview

After the first-grade students have had an opportunity to select objects around the room and measure them with their cube trains, Tracy Sola presents a table of objects that are labeled, such as “Spoon” and “Can."  She asks the students to measure the objects and share their results on charts that indicated length (e.g., 5 cubes long, 6 cubes long, or 7 cubes long).

Teacher Commentary

They got a bin full of Unifix cubes that were not connected. I asked partners to choose an item and to measure it using cubes.

Up until now, they'd been measuring with a train of cubes, stacking them together to see how long something was.
