These "public lessons" (a term from Lesson Study practices) have been developed by the Noyce Foundation and are taught by practicing teachers and professional developers. These lessons have been extensively field-tested in multiple settings and refined over time, and are generally presented to an audience of participating students and observing teachers. Most draw on learning tasks developed by the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS).
Word Problem Clues (2nd Grade)
Tracy Lewis leads a re-engagement lesson on the language of word problems, helping students to use word clues to identify mathematical operations. Students explore errors and strategies as they look together at student work. In addition to the lesson, the multimedia documentation of Tracy Lewis's teaching includes a pre-teaching planning conversation with Anthony Rogers, Leslie Thornley, and Camille Paris, and a follow-up faculty debrief with observing teachers. Number Operations (4th Grade)
Becca Sherman shows students that "a picture is worth a thousand words" to represent multiplication and division. Sherman's students use the Singapore Bar Model to discuss strategies for solving multiplication and division problems, and work in small groups to analyze other students' strategies for doing the same. In addition to the lesson, the multimedia documentation of Sherman's teaching includes a follow-up faculty discussion of the lesson. VIDEO >>
Proportions and Ratios (5th Grade)
Hillary Lewis-Wolfsen leads students through a re-engagement activity identifying strong strategies for approaching a "candies" assessment created by the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS). In addition to an hour-long lesson, the multimedia documentation of Lewis-Wolfsen's teaching includes a pre-teaching planning conversation with Carolyn Dobson and Linda Fisher, and a follow-up faculty debrief with observing teachers. Multiple Representations of Numeric Patterning (5th/6th Grade)
Fran Dickinson leads students through a lesson on devising multiple representations of numeric patterning. The multimedia documentation of Dickinson's teaching includes a pre-teaching planning conversation between Dickinson, Margie Trainer, math coach, and Stacy Emory, the curriculum and resource coordinator for the San Carlos Charter Learning Center. The documentation also includes a follow-up faculty debrief with observing teachers, reflections by the coach and the students, and an interview with participating students. VIDEO >>
Area and Perimeter (7th Grade)
Antoinette Villarin leads a lesson asking students to identify successful strategies for finding the area and perimeter of various sized pizzas. The multimedia documentation of Villarin's teaching includes a pre-teaching planning conversation between Villarin, Suzanne McSpadden, math coach, and Patricia Ferrant, the teacher of record for the documented class. The documentation also includes a follow-up faculty debrief with observing teachers and an interview with participating students. VIDEO >>
Algebraic Equations, Inequalities, and Properties (7th Grade)
Jacob Disston leads a lesson asking students to sort, describe, and discuss categories of symbol strings (expressions, inequalities, and equations). The multimedia documentation of Disston's teaching includes a pre-teaching planning conversation, the entire instructional block, and a faculty post-lesson debrief. VIDEO >>
Comparing Linear Functions (7th/8th Grade)
Cecilio Dimas leads students through a lesson asking students to analyze various movie rental pricing options and methods for conducting cost analysis. The multimedia documentation of Dimas's teaching includes a pre-teaching planning conversation between Dimas, Sally Keyes, math coach, and Kamaljit Sangha, another math teacher at Ida Price Middle School. The documentation also includes a follow-up faculty debrief with observing teachers and an interview with participating students. VIDEO >>
Quadratic Functions (9th/10th/11th Grade)
Barbara Shreve engages her high school Algebra students in an analysis of different strategies for solving quadratic expressions and equations in an "Algebra Success" course. The multimedia documentation of Shreve's teaching includes a pre-teaching planning conversation between Shreve and her colleague Phil Tucher, the entire lesson, and a follow-up coaching debrief with Tucher. VIDEO >>
Properties of Quadrilaterals (9th/10th Grade)
Cathy Humphreys challenges her high school Geometry students in an extended, block-schedule, two-day cooperative group investigation of the properties of quadrilateral "kites" inspired by "The Shape of Things" Problem of the Month. The multimedia documentation of Humphreys' teaching includes a two-hour initial lesson and a two-hour follow-up lesson. VIDEO >>
